How To Change Your Doctor

If You want to change your Doctor, in Spanish by law you can.

You can fill it in, print it and send it as instructed below.

But first you need to have a doctor in the first place.

The law  1/2003 recognizes your right to choose your doctor and the "Decreto" 37/ 2006, establish the way to do it.
 
Who can do it?

Those who already have a doctor.   Can be done by the patient him/herself or by a legal representative.

When to do it?      Any day.

2 -  In any Post Office. In this case the form should be stamped and dated by the Post office, both the original and the copy. Then send it to the addresses listed above.

3 -  And if possible, use the local Health Centre.

But be aware, if you do decide to take the third option it is likely that unless you want to change to the doctor of your spouse the change will be refused. We advised to take the first or second option unless you want to move to your spouse doctor.

or  - if you want to cancel your assignation to a particular doctor (why would you want to do that I do not know)

and then address this form to the coordinator of the Health Centre.

The coordinator of the Health Centre will be the one to resolve this petition. If you want to change to another Health Centre the chosen Health Centre will have to accept the change beforehand. ( very unlikely  to be accepted ).. The coordinator has got 1 month to resolve the petition since the moment you present the form and it is dated and stamped.

If they say yes, there you are with your new doctor.

If there is no reply within one month, it is equivalent to say yes and there you are with your new doctor.

If they say no,  you will have to present another form ( " recurso de alzada ") within one   or three months  depending ( I am not sure depending on what, so I advise you to contact a solicitor within 1 month, who for very little money will do it for you ).

Once you have a new doctor, you cannot change again yor doctor for at least six months.

Those who have a new doctor through reorganization of the Health Centre will have to wait three months to ask to go back to their previous doctor.

In real life in this area they will refuse the changes unless your spouse is with the doctor you want to go to. Why? I guess because they do not want the hassle to allow you to choose. To say that the doctor is full is simply not true as all doctors are full and by doing it they denegate your right to choose your own doctor.
