Mayoress Visits 'Paralysed' Secondary School

DURING HER visit to the coast last week to lay the first stone of the Infant School, the Mayor of Orihuela, Monica Lorente, took the opportunity to visit the barely built Playa Flamenca Institute.

As RTN has reported on several occasions, the building works on the new secondary school on Orihuela Costa have been suspended for several months after the playground was found to be too close to the nearby AP7 motorway. Then the construction company originally contracted to carry out the work pulled out of the project, leaving the Town Hall to go through the tender process all over again.

The Mayor had a meeting with the new constructors whilst she was at the site and later announced that work on the new secondary educational facility would resume within “approximately” two months and that the school would be finished and ready to welcome pupils and teachers within 15 months.

The building takes up an area of 9,000 square metres and will have several floors as well as sports facilities, specific technology classrooms and a gymnasium.

“This is a huge educational infrastructure for the coast,” the Mayor told RTN, “and in fact, it will be one of the leading secondary educational facilities in the whole of the Alicante Province.

“There have been a number of concerns with regards to this project, but they have been sorted now and a number of modifications to the building plans have been made to ensure that they comply with the necessary regulations. The Town Hall will be treating this project with the utmost priority for the residents of the Orihuela Coast.”

RTN has secured an exclusive interview this week with the Orihuela Mayor and will have a full report in next week’s paper, so make sure you pick up a copy.
